English classics from Austen to Orwell
What is here: This category brings together older fiction, poetry, drama, and a little non-fiction from the English literary tradition. The range is fairly broad: Victorian novels, Gothic fiction, satire, ghost stories, modernist writing, adventure, and some children’s classics.
Authors you may come across: There are many books here by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, H. G. Wells, Wilkie Collins, and Shakespeare. Stock may change, so the mix of authors and editions will not stay exactly the same.
Scope: A lot of the current titles lean toward nineteenth- and early twentieth-century writing, with strong representation of English novelists and some well-known Irish and British authors that are often shelved alongside them. You will also find detective fiction, science fiction, and supernatural stories within the classics frame.
If you want a wider overview, see the main Classics category. For classics centred more clearly on the United States, there is American Classics. For older texts such as epic, ancient drama, and medieval writing, try Ancient & Medieval Classics.
