On the negative side, readers note that not everything in the volume is equally engaging. The later, longer, more “dramatic” or symbolic poems can feel abstract, obscure, or weighed down by older language, Irish history, and literary or esoteric references that are hard to follow without background knowledge. Some find these sections intellectually impressive but emotionally distant, preferring the concise early lyrics to the sprawling later epics. A few admit that large portions of the book went “over their heads,” and that a newcomer might need patience—or secondary commentary—to get the full value from the collection. Overall, though, even critics of particular poems still regard the book as a major, rewarding body of work, best approached slowly and aloud.
