Many complain about overblown metaphors, clumsy similes, and sex scenes so purple they become unintentionally comic (“my body was her chariot and she rode me into the sun” is often cited). The narrator’s voice is frequently described as egotistical and self-righteous, with a tone of self-aggrandizement that some readers find insufferable. There’s also a sense among critics that the book mistakes sheer length and intensity of self-reflection for depth, leading some to abandon it after 5–200 pages, baffled by its popularity.

In sum, fans experience *Shantaram* as an epic, generous, life-affirming narrative full of striking observations; its critics experience the same elements as overwrought, narcissistic, and philosophically shallow. It tends to inspire devotion or disdain, with relatively little middle ground.
