Book Description

A historical novel set in Jamaica during the final turbulent years of slavery and the early years of freedom. The story is narrated by July, a black slave girl who lives and works on the Amity sugar plantation. She recounts her life from childhood through the Baptist War of 1831 and the abolition of slavery, telling of her mother Kitty, the other enslaved people on the estate, and Caroline Mortimer, the white woman who owns the plantation. The novel combines meticulous historical detail with an ironic, often humorous voice, exploring the brutality of slavery, the complexity and agency of the enslaved, and the ways in which history is written and edited. July’s son Thomas, who publishes her story, frequently interrupts and shapes the narrative, creating a layered, self‑conscious account of Jamaica’s colonial past and the struggle for freedom.
