Opis Książki
„The Nicomachean Ethics” Arystotelesa to klasyczne dzieło filozofii moralnej, fundament etyki cnót i jeden z najważniejszych tekstów w historii myśli zachodniej.

Book Description
Aristotle’s “The Nicomachean Ethics” is a foundational work of moral philosophy and the classic statement of virtue ethics. The central question of the book is: what is the highest good for a human being? Aristotle’s answer is eudaimonia – usually translated as ‘happiness’ or ‘flourishing’ – understood not as a passing feeling but as a whole life lived well. He argues that the good life consists in rational activity in accordance with virtue, and systematically analyses the moral virtues such as courage, temperance, justice, generosity, and greatness of soul, as well as the intellectual virtues and practical wisdom (phronesis). The work offers influential accounts of moral responsibility, voluntary and involuntary action, choice, habituation, and character formation. A substantial portion is devoted to Aristotle’s famous theory of friendship, distinguishing friendships of utility, pleasure, and virtue, and explaining why deep friendship is essential to the best life. The final books develop the ideal of the contemplative life and the place of philosophical reflection within human flourishing. This Oxford University Press edition presents the text in modern English translation with scholarly notes, making it an essential resource for students of philosophy, classics, ethics, political theory, theology, and anyone interested in the history of ideas, happiness studies, and the ethics of character.

- Review summary: Readers widely acknowledge *Nicomachean Ethics* as foundational and intellectually rewarding but not easy or “pleasurable” in a casual sense. Many admire its depth, especially the analysis of eudaimonia (flourishing) and virtue as habit, and find that it offers a powerful alternative to both punitive religious morality and modern, emotion-based ideas of happiness. Some report that it clarified and even reshaped their ethical outlook over time. However, others note that it is dry, repetitive, and conceptually demanding, requiring slow, attentive reading and prior context. Overall sentiment is respectful and positive, but with frequent warnings about difficulty and abstraction.
