A peasant boy from northern Italy with a gift for languages and for inventive lying, Baudolino becomes the adopted son and confidant of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, participates in imperial intrigues, and eventually sets off on a fantastical quest to find the legendary kingdom of Prester John. Eco blends meticulously researched medieval history with myth, theology, philosophy and tall tales, exploring how stories, forgeries and beliefs shape what later generations call “history”. The novel is at once an adventure, a satire of credulity and power, and a playful meditation on truth, fiction and the act of storytelling itself.
