War Without Fronts: The USA in Vietnam is a major historical study of the Vietnam War, focusing on American war crimes and the structural conditions that made them possible. Beginning with the My Lai massacre of 16 March 1968, when soldiers of C Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Regiment, 11th Brigade, Americal Division killed more than 400 Vietnamese civilians in Quang Ngai Province, Bernd Greiner argues that this atrocity was not an aberration but part of a broader pattern of violence. Drawing on extensive research and unprecedented access to US Army archives, he examines search-and-destroy tactics, body-count metrics, rules of engagement, and the dehumanization of the enemy that encouraged attacks on civilians. Greiner traces responsibility from ordinary soldiers through the officer corps up to the Pentagon and the White House, showing how political decisions, military doctrine, and institutional cover-ups shaped events on the ground. Combining military, political, and social history, the book explains how a campaign officially aimed at winning “hearts and minds” turned into a war against the civilian population and explores the consequences for both American and Vietnamese societies and for the historical memory of the Vietnam War.
