Clarissa Hailsham-Brown, the imaginative wife of a Foreign Office diplomat, loves to daydream about crime and often wonders what she would do if she came downstairs one morning and found a dead body in the house. Her idle speculation turns into a nightmare when she discovers a corpse in the drawing room of her country house in Kent. With her husband due home shortly, bringing with him an important foreign politician, Clarissa panics and persuades her three house guests to help her hide the body. It soon emerges that the murdered man is not a stranger to some members of the house party and that several of them may have motives for wanting him dead. As a determined police inspector begins to investigate, Clarissa and her companions must juggle the search for the killer with an increasingly desperate attempt to convince the authorities that no murder has taken place at all. The novel blends a classic Agatha Christie-style puzzle, country-house atmosphere and light comedy of manners.
