The book challenges the comforting image of Austen’s fiction as a reflection of a stable, harmonious society, revealing instead the economic insecurity, family tensions and social constraints that shaped both her life and her novels. It is a detailed reassessment of Austen as a woman and as a writer, set against the social and cultural landscape of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England.
