Wounded Confederate soldier Inman deserts the army and undertakes a long, perilous journey across the devastated landscape of the American South to return to his home in the mountains of Cold Mountain and to his prewar sweetheart, Ada. In parallel, Ada, left alone after her father’s death, struggles to learn how to run a failing farm with the help of the resourceful Ruby. The novel weaves a love story and an odyssey-like homecoming with a stark portrayal of war, richly detailed nature writing, and reflections on solitude, survival, and social change.
