Historian Colin Shindler explores Britain’s post-war system of National Service from 1946 to 1962 through the memories of the men who were conscripted. Drawing on interviews with ex-conscripts from different backgrounds, ranks and branches of the armed forces, he reconstructs both the mundane routines of barracks life and the dangers of overseas postings. The book takes the reader from a tense, divided Berlin and the heat of Tripoli in 1948 to the Suez Crisis and the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, as well as to bases from Aldershot to Aden. These first-hand accounts reveal how National Service shaped a whole generation of young British men and reflect wider social change in Britain – from post-war austerity and the persistence of the class system to the coronation of Elizabeth II, the rise of rock ’n’ roll and the beginning of the end of the British Empire.
