Book Description
Dorothy Rowe, a clinical psychologist, explores what fear is, how it shapes our inner world and relationships, and how it can develop into many forms of mental distress. She focuses on our deepest fear – the fear of annihilation of the self, of ceasing to exist or discovering that our life is not what we believed it to be. Drawing on psychological theory and case studies from her therapeutic practice, Rowe shows how people build complex systems of beliefs and defenses to protect themselves from this fear, and how these defenses can appear as what psychiatry calls mental disorders. In this twentieth‑anniversary edition she also discusses changes in the psychiatric system since the book first appeared in 1987. The book encourages readers to know themselves better, to accept their feelings and limitations, and to face fear with courage in order to find a more stable and lasting happiness.

- Review summary: Readers describe „Beyond Fear” as a deep, psychologically rich exploration of how fear shapes our inner lives and relationships, rather than a simple self-help manual. Many praise Rowe’s clear, compassionate explanations of how fear can evolve into depression, schizophrenia, and other mental distress, and they find her emphasis on self-acceptance, self‑love, and accepting the world’s ambiguity genuinely life‑changing. The case studies and dialogues with clients are seen as insightful and accessible, helping readers understand their own and others’ minds more clearly; several report that the book has had a lasting impact, even prompting immediate rereads and a wish they had discovered it decades earlier. On the downside, some find parts of the book theory‑heavy or dense and admit to skipping those sections, and its tone and approach feel very much like a traditional psychotherapist’s text, which may be less appealing to readers seeking a lighter, more conventional self-help style.
