Saint Julien, a French village, on August 1, 1914. Like all its inhabitants, little Lucienne is preparing for the village festival. But suddenly, the atmosphere changes; the priest and the mayor cross the square with somber faces, and the church bell rings the alarm. The villagers gather to read the large posters announcing the general mobilization. Charles, Lucienne’s brother, is twenty-two years old and has just completed his military service. 'I must leave, my Lulu. I will go to fight against the Germans,’ he tells his sister. While newspapers claim that the war will be short, the letters Lulu receives from her brother contradict this. Through his letters from the front and the love she has for him, Lucienne must face the true visage of war herself. At the end of the book, there’s a dossier on the Great War with reproductions of period documents.
