A murder in Paris first redirects his attention, but the trail soon leads south, where the deaths appear to be linked by more than coincidence. At the National Museum of Natural History, Adamsberg meets a retired employee who reveals that the victims share a dark childhood connection at an orphanage called The Mercy, where they belonged to a violent group of boys known as the „band of recluses.” Adamsberg faces two central puzzles: a third victim who was never part of the band, and the implausibly large quantity of venom that would be required to kill. When more former members of the group begin to die from similar bites, Adamsberg and his eccentric team uncover a long-buried tragedy behind the orphanage walls, where abuse, guilt, and the desire for revenge have festered for decades. Blending atmospheric French settings, offbeat characters, and a slow-burning police procedural, the novel explores how old wounds can poison the present.
