A narrative history of the women pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary who ferried Britain’s newest and fastest aircraft during World War II. Drawing on interviews conducted across four continents, Giles Whittell tells the stories of women from Britain, the United States, Chile, Australia, Poland, Argentina and elsewhere who chose dangerous flying over safety and convention. Barred from combat but exposed to many of the same risks, they flew unarmed aircraft without radios or modern instruments, often in poor weather and under threat from enemy fighters. The book combines collective biography, military and social history, and an exploration of courage, friendship, love and the struggle against entrenched sexism in wartime aviation.
