Pseudo-Skylax’s Periplous is the first full edition of the work in over 150 years, including a newly revised Greek text and specially produced maps with the first complete English translation. This text, attributed to Skylax of Karyanda, was actually written by an unknown author in the 4th century BC. It describes the coasts of the Mediterranean and Black Sea, naming hundreds of towns and geographical features such as rivers, harbors, and mountains. However, as argued by Graham Shipley, it is not a record of a voyage or a navigational handbook for sailors, but the first work of Greek theoretical geography. While other scientists were gathering data about natural sciences and political systems or making rapid advances in philosophy, rhetorical theory, and cosmology, the unknown author collected data about the structure of the lands bordering the seas known to the Greeks, with the probable aim of demonstrating the size of the inhabited Greek world.
