One of the greatest and most enduring travel accounts of the twentieth century. Heinrich Harrer, a renowned mountaineer and Olympic ski champion, was caught in the Himalayas during the outbreak of the Second World War. Being Austrian, he was interned in India. Through an almost super-human effort, on his third attempt, he succeeded in escaping the internment camp and fled into Tibet. After a series of remarkable experiences in a country never before crossed by a Westerner, Harrer reached the forbidden city of Lhasa. He stayed there for seven years, learned the language, and acquired a greater understanding of Tibet and the Tibetans than any Westerner before him. He became a friend and tutor to the young Dalai Lama and eventually accompanied him to India during the Red Chinese invasion.
