A real wartime diary written by Helga Weiss, a Jewish girl from Prague who was deported to the Terezin ghetto at the age of twelve and later sent to Auschwitz and other camps. Her entries, begun before the war and continued in secret during her imprisonment, record daily life under persecution: hunger, overcrowding, illness, fear, and the painful separation of families. The diary shows the Holocaust through the eyes of a child whose voice gradually becomes more mature as the reality of genocide becomes clear. This edition includes later additions by Helga and editorial notes that place her personal story in its historical context and follow her survival and life after the war.
