A Month in the Country by J. L. Carr is a brief, elegiac novel set during the summer of 1920 in rural England. Tom Birkin, a shell-shocked veteran of the First World War trapped in an unhappy marriage, arrives in the small village of Oxgodby to uncover a medieval wall painting in the local church. Immersed in the quiet of the building, the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the unhurried rhythms of village life, he slowly begins to heal, recovering a sense of peace, belonging and hope for the future. Narrated by Birkin as an old man looking back, the book recalls one almost idyllic summer marked by recovery, tentative friendships and an unfulfilled love, a time he comes to see as a lost possibility for a different life. The novel weaves reflections on the psychological scars of the Great War with a subtle portrait of English provincial life, art, faith and the passing of time. It was adapted into a film starring Colin Firth, Natasha Richardson and Kenneth Branagh, and is now regarded as a modern classic of twentieth‑century English fiction.
