“The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” is a powerful and unsettling novel about innocence, friendship and the horrors of the Holocaust. Nine-year-old Bruno, the son of a high-ranking Nazi officer, is forced to leave his comfortable home in Berlin when his father is given a new posting at a remote place Bruno mishears as “Out-With”. Bored and lonely, Bruno explores the area around his new house and discovers a fence, behind which he sees people in strange striped clothes. There he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy of the same age and with the same birthday, imprisoned in the nearby concentration camp. As their secret friendship grows, Bruno remains largely unaware of the true nature of the camp and the ideology his family serves. Told from a child’s limited perspective, the novel exposes the brutality of prejudice and war, highlighting the moral blindness of adults and the tragic cost of hatred. It is a short, accessible read that invites discussion about history, ethics and empathy.
