John Fowles’s “Mantissa” is an experimental, highly self‑conscious novel that takes place largely in a hospital room and inside the mind of novelist Miles Green. After an accident, Miles wakes with no clear memory of who he is and finds himself confronted by a mysterious woman who shifts roles—from doctor to lover to Erato, the classical muse of love poetry. Their encounter becomes an intellectual and erotic battle over authorship, imagination, and control of the narrative itself. Through sharp, often comic dialogue and abrupt changes of tone and register, Fowles plays with literary conventions, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, author and character, body and text. The novel functions as a metafictional meditation on the nature of creativity, the male gaze, sexual politics, and the uneasy power dynamics between creator and creation. Dense with allusion and philosophical digression, “Mantissa” is a short but demanding work that interrogates what it means to write—and to be written.
