In this engaging history of the Venetian school, John Steer examines its unique qualities and traces its development from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. From the Bellinis onwards, fifteenth and sixteenth-century Venetian artists employed light, space, and above all, color to dramatic effect, showcased in the works of Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. This heroic tradition waned in the seventeenth century but resurged in the eighteenth, a period dominated by the great masters Canaletto, Tiepolo, and Guardi.
