As Roger Lambert tells it, he, a middle-aged professor of divinity, is confronted in his office by Dale Kohler, an earnest young computer scientist who believes that quantifiable evidence of God’s existence is accumulating. The theological-scientific debate and Roger’s efforts to disabuse Dale of his faith form the basis of the novel. Additionally, there is an erotic attraction pulling Esther, Roger’s much younger wife, into Dale’s bed. The novel is a majestic allegory of faith and reason, ending also as a black comedy of revenge, representing Roger’s version—Roger Chillingworth’s side of the triangle described by Hawthorne’s 'Scarlet Letter’, reimagined for a disbelieving age.
