Begun in 1845, the year Louis Philippe conferred a peerage and a lifetime seat in the Senate upon Victor Hugo, it was completed when the author was living in exile in the Channel Islands. The book follows the journey of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, and his struggles in France under the law-enforcing inspector Javert. The novel depicts the desperation that drives him to steal a loaf of bread and his redemption through caring for Cosette, whom he adopts as his daughter—a central theme in Hugo’s work.
