Launched to outflank the German Gustav Line and open the road to Rome, the operation became a prolonged and brutal struggle as the beachhead turned into a deadly stalemate. Lloyd Clark sets the strategic and political context, then follows the landings, the establishment of the perimeter, the hard-fought battles, the months of attrition, and the eventual breakout and capture of Rome in June 1944.
