Set in the port of Marseille in the 1920s, Marcel Pagnol’s play „Marius” follows the inner conflict of Marius, the son of César, owner of the Bar de la Marine. Marius is torn between his deep love for Fanny, a young shellfish seller, and his irresistible desire to go to sea and travel the world. Through lively, humorous and tender dialogue, Pagnol portrays the everyday life of the harbor, the warmth and tensions of a close-knit community, and the painful choices between duty and dreams. First staged in Paris in 1929, the play became a classic of French theatre and the opening part of Pagnol’s famous Marseille Trilogy, later adapted for the screen in 1931 by Pagnol and director Alexander Korda.
