The book ranges from Greek and Roman campaigns through medieval and early modern conflicts, the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, the world wars, and on to Iraq and Afghanistan. Its cast includes famous commanders and writer-soldiers as well as ordinary men and women in uniform, ambulance drivers, and modern professional troops.
