A detailed history of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in 1917. Drawing on British and previously overlooked German archival sources, Nick Lloyd reconstructs the planning, conduct and consequences of the British offensive in Flanders, in which more than 500,000 men were killed, wounded, gassed or drowned between July and November 1917. He explores the realities of trench warfare and the mud‑choked battlefield, the experiences of soldiers at the front, and the political and strategic pressures shaping Allied decision‑making. Challenging the conventional view of Passchendaele as a wholly futile bloodbath, Lloyd argues that by 1917 the British Expeditionary Force had become a far more effective fighting force and came closer than is often recognised to forcing a major German retreat in Belgium, while still emphasising the immense human cost of the campaign.
