The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde’s classic three-act comedy of manners that satirizes the English upper classes of the late Victorian era. Two young gentlemen, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, lead double lives by adopting the name Ernest in order to escape social obligations and pursue romance more freely. Their deceptions collide when they find themselves in the same country house, both claiming to be Ernest and both engaged to women who insist they can only love a man with that name. Through sparkling dialogue, witty epigrams, and escalating misunderstandings, Wilde exposes the hypocrisy, snobbery, and triviality of fashionable society, while playfully questioning ideas of identity, marriage, and respectability.
