A work of military non-fiction that tells the story of the British 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (3 Para) during their 2006 deployment to Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan. Sent initially to provide security for reconstruction, the battlegroup quickly found itself in almost continuous combat against determined Taliban forces. Drawing on extensive access to the soldiers involved, Patrick Bishop reconstructs the campaign from the ground level, depicting the extreme heat, shortages of food, water and ammunition, and the constant threat of attack around isolated outposts. The book focuses on the experiences, courage and losses of the paratroopers, places their actions in the wider political and strategic context of the Afghan War, and records the heavy price paid in casualties, including men later awarded the Victoria Cross and George Cross.
