The novel follows two sisters, Sarah and Emily Grimes, who grow up in a broken home after their parents’ divorce in the United States. From childhood they take very different paths: Sarah chooses a seemingly safe, conventional life of marriage and family, while Emily pursues education, independence and a series of love affairs that never truly satisfy her. Over several decades Yates traces their changing relationship, their disappointments, and the slow erosion of their hopes, offering a cool, unsentimental portrait of middle‑class American life and of how personal choices, social expectations and chance shape – and often damage – the lives of both women.
