News of the sudden death a hundred years ago of the Irish nationalist politician Charles Stewart Parnell shocked Europe and the United States. Today, he is mostly associated with a sexual scandal that overshadowed his true impact on British and Irish history. In ten years, Parnell, an Anglo-Irish landlord from County Wicklow, gave Irish nationalism a new, effective political shape. During the 1880s, his presence dominated British domestic politics. Robert Kee describes how Parnell’s personality revived Irish nationalism. Ironically, the most personal aspect of his life abruptly halted the nationalist movement he had dedicated himself to. Nevertheless, the eventual triumph of Irish nationalism many years later was built on political foundations that Parnell helped establish.
