Rose Tremain’s novel “The Way I Found Her” is a literary coming-of-age story with the tension of a psychological thriller, set in 1990s Paris. Thirteen-year-old Lewis Little spends the summer in Paris with his mother Alice, who is translating the latest medieval-style romance by famous Russian émigré writer Valentina Gavrilovich. While Alice works, Lewis roams the city and becomes increasingly fascinated – and then obsessed – with Valentina: her beauty, her charisma and the hints of danger in her past. When Valentina’s history violently intrudes into their present, the seemingly enchanted Parisian summer turns into a dark, suspenseful quest involving disappearance, secrets and moral ambiguity. The novel stands out for its vivid Paris setting, intense adolescent narrator, metafictional use of books and translation, and its subtle exploration of desire, obsession, mother–son dynamics and the loss of innocence.
