Focusing on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries but constantly resonating with the Covid-19 era, Schama traces outbreaks of smallpox in London, cholera in Paris and plague in India, showing how terror of contagion collided with the ingenuity of doctors, scientists and public health reformers. At the heart of the book stands Waldemar Haffkine, a Jewish student from Odesa who became a pioneering microbiologist at the Pasteur Institute and developed mass-produced vaccines against cholera and bubonic plague in British India, only to be undone by prejudice and political injustice. Through vivid, character-driven narratives set in hospitals, prisons, palaces and slums, Schama explores the intersections of medicine, empire, class, religion and global politics. Crossing borders between East and West, rich and poor, science and power, the book argues for a deeper understanding of our shared vulnerability and interdependence, insisting that in the face of global health crises „there are no foreigners, only familiars.”
