This volume brings together Tacitus’ Agricola and Germania in a modern English translation. Agricola is both a biography of Gnaeus Julius Agricola – Tacitus’ father‑in‑law and the most famous governor of Roman Britain – and the earliest detailed account of Britain to survive. Tacitus describes the island’s geography, climate and peoples, and narrates the Roman conquest, from Boudicca’s revolt in AD 61 to the campaigns that took Agricola as far as Anglesey and northern Scotland, setting individual virtue against the corruption of the empire. Germania offers a concise but influential ethnographic survey of the Germanic tribes: their customs, political structures, religion and methods of warfare. In both works Tacitus repeatedly contrasts the supposed simplicity and stern virtues of ‘barbarian’ societies with the decadence and moral decay of imperial Rome, creating a key historical source as well as a sharp political and moral commentary.
