“In the Wars” is a powerful memoir by Dr Waheed Arian, who was born in war‑torn Afghanistan and spent his early childhood under bombs in Kabul before fleeing with his family to refugee camps in Pakistan. Growing up in extreme poverty, often ten people to a room and with no regular access to school, he taught himself from second‑hand textbooks and learned English by listening to the BBC World Service. Smuggled to the UK at fifteen with just a hundred dollars in his pocket, he was advised to aim for low‑paid work – but instead set his sights on becoming a doctor.

Battling PTSD, anxiety and the challenges of life as an undocumented teenager, Arian studied relentlessly and went on to win places to study medicine at the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and Harvard. He now works in A&E in the NHS. Refusing to stop there, in 2015 he founded Arian Teleheal, an award‑winning global telemedicine charity that connects doctors in conflict zones and low‑resource countries with specialist volunteers in the UK, US, Europe and Australia, helping to save and transform lives in places like the one he came from.
