The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga is a darkly comic, first‑person confession of Balram Halwai, a man born into poverty in a village on the Ganges who claws his way up in the new, globalized India. Forced to leave school and work in a teashop, Balram eventually becomes a chauffeur for a wealthy landlord’s son in New Delhi. Driving his master through malls, luxury apartments and call centres, he becomes acutely aware of the vast gulf between rich and poor and of the corruption that underpins the system. Convinced that he will never escape his social cage by honest means, he decides that the only way into the world of opportunity is to murder his employer. Moving from lawless rural Bihar to the booming tech hub of Bangalore, the novel offers an unromantic, satirical portrait of contemporary India, exposing class oppression, political rot and moral compromise through the ruthless yet strangely engaging voice of its narrator.
