Book Description
This book explores the social history of cycling in 1890s Britain and shows how the modern bicycle transformed everyday life. William Manners examines the excitement, debate and controversy that surrounded the new machine at the end of the nineteenth century and explains how cheap, personal transport reshaped society. Drawing on cycling club journals, newspapers and writers such as H.G. Wells, he describes how millions of people gained new freedom of movement, how cycling clubs became centres of fashion and sociability, and how the bicycle opened up the countryside to ordinary riders. A major focus of the book is the role of the bicycle in women’s emancipation, offering an escape from domestic constraints and traditional conventions. The book also looks at international parallels in countries such as the United States, France and Australia, presenting the bicycle as a marvel of modern technology that helped reinvent Britain and influenced the wider world.
