„No Country for Love” is a poignant tale of love, survival, and tough choices. Seventeen-year-old Debora Rosenbaum, a literature enthusiast, arrives in the capital of the new Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Kharkiv. The story unfolds in the 1930s as new Soviet orders replace old ways. Debora meets a young officer named Samuel, who dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. However, Debora’s hopes, along with Ukraine’s, quickly fade. A famine devastates the land, and any deviation from Moscow’s ideology is harshly punished. Samuel is sentenced to ten years of hard labor, leaving Debora to face her challenges alone with a child. As Nazi forces advance through Ukraine, fields of wheat turn into fields of blood. Forced to renounce her beloved, her identity, and even her name, Debora learns to survive, manipulate, and resist. The novel explores harrowing themes of totalitarian regimes and the difficult choices the heroine must make.
