Book Description
A short introductory work on Kṛṣṇa consciousness in which A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda explains that the real goal of all yoga systems is to understand and realize Kṛṣṇa. Drawing on the Bhagavad-gītā, he presents Kṛṣṇa consciousness as the “topmost yoga system” and describes different types of yoga, the role of the supreme master of yoga, the laws of material nature and karma, and the soul’s real life beyond the body. In a series of brief chapters he discusses the perfection of yoga, the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, how bhakti-yoga works, sources of absolute knowledge, and the genuine formula for peace. Written for a broad, especially Western, audience, the book aims to give a concise, accessible introduction to devotional yoga and Vedic spiritual philosophy.

- Review summary: Readers are divided but generally find the book accessible and culturally interesting. Many appreciate it as a friendly, introductory text that offers simple, practical guidance on human coexistence, ego, and identity (“one is not one’s body, pride, problems, or talents”) and gives a window into Indian/Hindu culture and the idea that yoga is equated with Kṛṣṇa. Some see it as an “interesting read” and a valuable look into someone else’s spiritual perspective, even if they are not followers.
On the negative side, several readers complain that the book is highly repetitive: the same analogies and points are recycled, and the core concepts of Kṛṣṇa consciousness are still not explained in a clear, systematic way, especially for Western newcomers. Questions raised by famous Western and Eastern seekers (like Lennon, Harrison, Ono) are perceived as never being addressed head‑on. Some also note an awkward or stilted style, wondering if it is a translation issue or an attempt at quirky humor, and mention a slightly judgmental tone toward non‑practitioners. A few feel the content becomes predictable and would work better as a play or opera than as a didactic text.
