Barbara Frale, a historian of the Knights Templar, offers a detailed account of the rise and fall of the Order of the Knights Templar, one of the most powerful and controversial religious-military institutions of the Middle Ages. At their height, the Templars rivaled the kingdoms of Europe in military strength, economic resources, and political influence. For seven centuries, the dramatic destruction of the order under accusations of heresy has been surrounded by mystery, largely because the official transcript of their trial before the Inquisition had disappeared. While working in the Vatican Secret Archives, Frale identified a long-misfiled document as the lost trial record. It shows that Pope Clement V actually absolved the Templars of heresy, radically challenging the traditional narrative of their guilt. Drawing on this discovery and a wide range of historical sources, Frale reconstructs the Templars’ origins, their role in the Crusades, their financial and political networks, and the forces that led to their suppression.
