A full-length biography of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, tracing her life from her upbringing in Spain as a daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella through her marriages to Prince Arthur and then Henry VIII, to her fall from favour and final years in exile from court. Drawing on contemporary chronicles, letters and modern historical research, Giles Tremlett reconstructs Catherine’s political and religious world, her role at the Tudor court, her piety and resilience, and her long struggle to defend the legitimacy of her marriage. The book also explores how the king’s desire to end his marriage to Catherine helped trigger England’s break with Rome and the beginnings of the English Reformation.
