Ogólnie powieść jest szeroko podziwiana za subtelność i emocjonalną dojrzałość, ale bywa odbierana jako zbyt spokojna i ociężała przez tych, którzy wolą bardziej dynamiczną, błyskotliwą Austen.

On the negative side, several readers find the pacing slow, especially in the first half, and feel that the plot and secondary characters don’t grip them as strongly as in Pride and Prejudice or Emma. Those who come to it expecting the brisk sparkle and overt humour of Austen’s more famous works can be disappointed, sensing less immediate charm or entertainment value.
